The BPSWA Museum

Why We Need a Museum

The Bus Preservation Society of Western Australia (BPSWA) aims to preserve the history of bus transport and the large part it played in Western Australia’s development and the contribution it made to the heritage of the state. We are a self-funded, not for profit organisation operated and managed entirely by volunteer members. All buses in the BPSWA collection are owned by the Society. Some have been purchased, others have been generously donated.

The BPSWA collection includes:
  • Preserved and restored motor buses spanning the eras 1900 – 2010.
  • Extensive records covering the pre-MTT fleets of private, municipal, and state companies and the early decades of the MTT with timetables, ticketing, routes, artefacts and ephemera.
  • A large collection of workshop manuals and spare parts catalogues.
  • Approximately 20,000 photographs covering the period 1903 to the present.
In order to keep our extensive collection of restored buses and memorabilia in prime condition, it’s important to house them undercover. We are currently in the situation where we are running out of space to house our current and future buses.
A dedicated display venue is necessary to ensure our heritage collection can be shared with the community for the years to come. Once the museum is built, it is our intention to rotate our vehicles to keep displays ‘fresh’.

Museum Plans

Plans are well underway, with a site secured in Whiteman Park for our proposed museum. The design layout of the building has been developed to allow easy public access, with minimal impact on bush areas. Planning for the location, layout and public access has been extensively researched to ensure all requirements and building codes have been met. Whiteman Park will also undertake initial site works to prepare the site. This includes removal of vegetation, making the site level, building a car parking area and relocating power and water services.

The layout is also designed around accessibility, with the area from the car park to the museum entrance suitable for those with accessibility requirements, ensuring our collection can be shared with everyone.

Ways to Get Involved

To realise the dream of many West Australians and build a dedicated museum for our heritage buses, a fund has been established to raise money. Any amount will be welcomed to help with making this dream a reality.

It is hoped that a major sponsor, together with donations from interested businesses and the general public will enable this to happen.
